Ballyteige Solar Farm

The consented Ballyteige Solar Farm (Planning ref: 2198) and consented Derrygrogan Solar Farm (Planning ref: 22378) are located c.5.8km northeast of Tullamore Town, Co Offaly.

Ballyteige Solar Limited comprises of Ballyteige Solar Farm and Derrygrogan Solar Farm and is owned by L&G NTR Clean Power (Europe) with RES acting as planning and development consultant.

The Ballyteige solar project is expected to provide enough power for ca. 22,000[1] homes and abate ca. 25,000tns[2] of CO2 annually.

The development of a 110kV grid substation and grid route to the existing Thornsberry 110kV substation is required to facilitate the connection of Ballyteige and Derrygrogan Solar Farms to the national grid. This application, called Colehill 110kV grid connection, will be made to An Coimisiún Pleanála.

Ballyteige Solar Limited propose to submit an amendment application to Offaly County Council to amend the previously consented development (Planning Ref: 2198). The proposed amendment will seek minor modifications to the consented development including the removal of the 38kV substation and infrastructure within the most northern field (Field 1), minor modifications to the solar farm layout, adjustment of the development period from 5 years to 10 years and increase the operational lifetime from 35 years to 40 years.

Ballyteige Solar Limited also propose to submit a planning application for a solar farm in townlands of Derrygrogan Little and Derrygrogan Big. The proposed solar PV development comprises of a total site area of c. 28.1 hectares and includes solar PV ground mounted support structures, string inverters, transformer stations, electrical cabling and ducting, internal access tracks and hardstanding areas, perimeter fencing and access gate, CCTV, a temporary construction compound and other ancillary infrastructure including drainage, additional landscaping and habitat enhancement as required and associated site development works relating to the access of the site. It is proposed that the solar farm will be operational for 40 years.

A Strategic Infrastructure Development (SID) application for a 110kV substation within Field 1 of Ballyteige Solar Farm and underground grid connection will be submitted to An Coimisiún Pleanála concurrently with the Ballyteige solar amendment application.

Ballyteige Solar Limited propose to submit the planning applications in December 2025. The proposed Ballyteige amendment planning application and the Strategic Infrastructure Development (SID) application can be viewed here
